Results of spectrophotometric observations of the blue compact dwarf galaxy Mrk 996 are presented. There are some features found in the galaxy spectrum distinguishing it from other blue compact dwarf galaxies: anomalously large neutral helium emission line intensities (I(He λ587.6)/I(Hβ) = 0.24, while usual value is 0.1), broad components in the majority of emission lines with Doppler widths corresponding to velocities about 250 km/s. Helium abundance, neon-to-oxygen and nitrogen-to-oxygen abundance ratios, derived within the framework of photoionization H II-region model, cannot be explained by any scenario of the chemical evolution of such objects. Observational data suggest in favour of emission line excitation due to propagating shocks induced by numerous supernovae explosions.
