We present time-resolved spectrophotometry of the eclipsing nova-like variable RW Tri. Our data were collected during an unexpected high state, ~3.5 mag brighter than previously recorded, increasing its brightness by ~0.3 mag over a 5-d period. Balmer emission, superposed on shallow absorption wings, has at least two components, one with a velocity compatible with the secondary star, the other from a location sharing a similar motion to the white dwarf. This second component, however, shows none of the characteristics of Keplerian accretion disc emission. HeI emission is absent at all orbital phases, while the HeII lambda4686-A feature is redshifted by 325 km s^-1 and has a FWZI of ~7000 km s^-1. Unlike the continuum and HeII emission, the Balmer fluxes show an increase during primary eclipse and undergo core absorption between orbital phases 0.5 and 1.0. The size of the accretion disc is not significantly different from that observed in the normal state. We discuss the line characteristics and some possible causes of the high state.
