Taking as a basis the similarity of the weathering processes of Martian surface rocks and of terrestrial continental surface in an arid climate, samples of iron-bearing phyllosilicates and palagonite were selected as probable analogs of Martian soil. The coloring pigment in all cases is goethite (α = FeOOH) and hematite (α = Fe2O3). A comparison of the reflection spectra of rocks obtained in the 0.38 - 1.1 μm range to the spectra of goethite and hematite enables us to come to the following conclusions, which can be of interest in the deciphering of Martian surface reflection spectra: the shape of the rocks' spectra is to a great degree determined by what mineral associations the coloring phases of goethite and hematite are dispersed in; the absorption band at α ≍ 0.9 μm in the spectra of some yellow clays occupies more long-wave position than the spectra of pure goethite; the authors do not find a clear dependence of characteristic rock reflection spectra on the degree of their exogenous alterations.
