Results are reported for spectrophotometry and photometry of the quasar NAB 0137-01, the suggested optical counterpart of the faint X-ray source 3U 0138-01. The prominent Balmer emission spectrum plus strong forbidden lines of Ne III and O III yield a redshift of 0.334; two other apparently genuine emission features are discussed which have no convincing identifications. The He II line at 4686 A and the O III Bowen lines are found to be lacking in the spectrum, and the absolute magnitude of the quasar is estimated to be -24.6. It is noted that the spectrum of the only confirmed X-ray quasar, 3C 273, is also characterized by the absence of 4686-A and Bowen-line emission. This similarity is considered as morphological evidence which strengthens the identification of NAB 0137-01 with 3U 0138-01.
