Recent claims that there exist certain intrinsic relations between Stromgren indices and redshift values of elliptic galaxies and of N-galaxies are investigated. Synthetic colors in the rest system of the respective galaxies are estimated from spectrophotometric surveys, with the result that none of the alleged trends in the (b-y) and m(1) indices of these galaxies can be confirmed. At present, no discrimination appears possible between N-galaxies, 'active ellipticals', and 'standard candles' using Stromgren indices only, nor does the m(1) index give a measure of the metallicity in these objects. Finally, problems arising from the calibration of absolute spectrophotometry at near-infrared wavelengths and from chance effects such as light variability and reddening are pointed out.
