Observational material for the nebula NGC 2261 and its nucleus R Mon is analyzed. It is shown that the radial velocity of the absorption lines of R Mon changes little with the time, and on the average is -40 km/sec. The emission line radial velocity is +53 km/sec on the basis of the Fe II lines and +29 km/sec on the basis of the H lines. A model of the nebula is proposed in which dense, weakly excited gas flows over a dust cone which is at rest relative to the star, the gas being accelerated along the direction of the cone axis. It is assumed that the absorption lines observed only in the spectrum of the nebula are formed in the gas layer on the background of the reflected continuum of R Mon.
