Field aligned resonances at ULF pulsation frequencies are important mechanisms for transporting energy from the solar wind to the ionosphere. Observations by the Goose Bay HF radar in the post midnight sector have established that a stable discrete spectrum of resonant frequencies in the mHz range exists. This can be ascribed to the existence of magnetospheric cavity resonances which drive the resonances. The cavity between the magnetopause and the turning point is usually assumed to be the cause of such phenomena. In this paper an alternative cavity in the magnetotail is studied and its eigenmodes and eigenfrequencies are computed. While this cavity produces frequencies which fit the observations, the excitation of such modes by the solar wind would be difficult. It is concluded that a cavity between the magnetopause and the turning point is the most probable source of the pulsations.
