An analytical expression is derived for determining the spectral index of primary cosmic rays. This is achieved by treating p-p collisions in terms of Drell-Yan and other related processes where the interaction at the quark level is represented by a dimensionless interaction potential. By adjusting a single free parameter in this formula, excellent agreement with experimental data is found over a wide energy range.
