The spectral index dependence of the properties of steep spectrum 3C and 4C radio sources was investigated by determining the fractions of such sources with specified apparent magnitude, redshifts, radio luminosity, and angular size. The correlations suggest that (1) the steep spectrum sources are on average further away and more luminous, and (2) the origins of the redshifts of radiogalaxies and quasars are the same. Expressions for the fractions were derived and evaluated under simplifying assumptions about the form of the radio luminosity and density evolution functions, and were compared with observations. Small changes in the luminosity function and/or large changes in the density evolution with spectral index are needed to explain the observed effects.
