Preliminary results are presented from observations of the He I 10830-A line in the quiet chromosphere, obtained in 1986 and 1987. It is found that the He I 10830-A line has an emission maximum outside the solar limb, and that the maximum intensity is roughly proportional to the line half-width. The emission maximum correlates with the monthly smoothed sunspot number. Also, initial results are given from attempts to fit calculated theoretical profiles to the observational data. The results suggest that there is no reason to assume that there is a 20-km/sec horizontal turbulence field.
