The spectral and temporal effects produced by the scattering of photons by cold electrons in a geometrically thin plasma shell around an X-ray source are studied analytically. Expressions are derived for the probability Pn for a photon to escape an optically thick shell after n scatterings, and the probability Qn for a photon to escape after n crossings of the cavity inside the shell. The probability Pn is combined with the energy distribution after n scatterings and the probability Qn with the time delay distribution after n crossings, to derive the corresponding Green's functions. In order to illustrate the spectral effects, the emergent spectra from input bremsstrahlung and blackbody spectra are computed and compared with Monte Carlo results. To illustrate the temporal effects, the temporal variability of the escaping photons from an input sinusoidal variation is calculated and the results are compared to similar ones for a uniform sphere.
