A novel method for the measurement of galaxy spiral and bar structure strength, based on the Fourier analysis of intensity distribution in a polar coordinate system set up in the plane of a galaxy, is presented. Application of the technique to the Sc I galaxy NGC 4254 shows that its asymmetric spiral pattern can be delineated as a superposition, on the main one-armed spiral, of five-armed and three-armed components. The quantitative and objective representation of morphological features by means of characteristic parameters is suggested, along with the injunction that theories of the origin of spiral structure must explain the asymmetric spiral structure of NGC 4254 without the help of such spiral exciters as tidal companions or a bar.
