Observations of the central body of eta Carinae in NGC 3372 made in November 1981 at 5672 A using the f/15 focus of the 3.9-m Anglo-Australian telescope coupled to a speckle interferometer (four-stage image intensifier and TV camera, capable of detecting individual photon events) and a hard-wired autocorrelator are reported. Autocorrelation was performed on 24,000 separate 256 x 256-pixel (= 4.06 x 4.06-arcsec) frames exposed for 0.04 sec, and the integrated autocorrelation functions were compared to those from an equal number of observations of a reference star. No indications of any binary components of the central object or any extended halo were detected within the 0.03-0.9-arcsec separation range: the autocorrelation is characteristic of a single unresolved source smaller than about 0.03 arcsec, corresponding to 84 AU at 2800 pc. It is proposed that it is a star of about 100 solar masses emitting about 10 to the 7th solar luminosity in the visible and IR. Other less likely explanations for the present findings are discussed.
