Roughness is an important indicator of the quality of a fabric. Tactual instruments and methods use the contact of a sharp pointer with the rough surface to evaluate height of asperities. The pointer, due to the forces acting during the contact, modifies soft asperities of textiles and influences the results of measurements. Non tactual methods use laser beam instead of pointers and a CCD for analyzing the scattered light. Triangulation method is used to calculate the distance between surface and laser sensor and variation of heights of asperities. The method minimizes deformations on the surface and improves process of measurement by increasing number of data and by decreasing time of measurement. However, due to complexity of process of light scattering from the surface of textiles and light sensing of CCD cameras, some specific effects lead to not realistic results which suggest a careful approach. The results of measurements depend on type of fibers, texture of textile, time of exposure, etc. Mechanism remains to be clarified.
