Carbon monoxide is in thermochemical disequilibrium in Neptune's atmosphere. The CO mixing ratio profile derived from line shape measurements suggests that CO is both transported from Neptune's deep interior by convection, and produced in the stratosphere by chemistry between hydrocarbons and an external supply of oxygen (Lellouch et al. 2005). To understand the nature of these internal and external sources, we wish to measure the CO abundance as a function of latitude as well as altitude. We present spatially resolved maps of Neptune in the CO J=2-1 transition from the Combined Array for Research in Millimeter-wave Astronomy (CARMA), and discuss the implications of these observations for Neptune's atmospheric circulation.
