In this paper we present first results of a study on the spatial variability of ERS-1 SAR derived ocean wave spectral characteristics within the CAL/VAL area south of Haltenbanken, Norway. An attempt is made to calibrate SAR spectra by using the in-situ-measurements (buoys, wave monitoring radar) at station T10. In order to do this, the SAR spectral information has been converted into frequency spectra of energy density, mean direction and directional width. The results obtained in reproducing the sea state over a full SAR image are acceptable, in particular, when the range travelling ocean wave component prevails.
