In the present paper, the results of a spherical harmonic analysis based on magnetic-storm data are used to study the basic latitudinal and longitudinal characteristics of the ring-current magnetic field. Two specific characteristics associated with the ring-current asymmetry and with the earth itself are identified in the spatial distribution of the Dst-variation field. The amplitude-phase characteristics of the principal harmonic components of the Dst field are calculated for the earth as a whole, for individual regions, and for each of the magnetic observatories under consideration.
