We obtain a rigorous statistical characterization of patterns in the spatial distribution of galaxies in volume-limited pencil-beam sections from the SDSS galaxy redshift survey using the tools of computational mechanics. These tools detect any and all patterns in a certain large class, the regular languages, at a given scale. They make minimal distribution assumptions beyond statistical stationarity (homogeneity) across the length of the pencil beam. It is shown that the radial (one-dimensional) distribution, averaged over pencil-beams, corresponds to a two-state Markov model, demonstrating the well-known phenomenon of clustering in the ˜ 5 Mpc range. We also obtain an average statistical complexity for the Markov model of .07 ± .005 bits, where the discretization scale is 1 character per 20 kpc and we use a binary alphabet with 1 and 0 representing a galaxy and empty space respectively. Our results imply that the radial distribution of galaxies out to z=0.15, when examined in <5 Mpc windows, is consistent with a Poisson clump point process model. This does not rule out possible additional structure with pending higher-dimensional and larger-scale analyses.
We express our gratitude to the University of Hawaii Institute of Astronomy REU program, where this work was done, and to the National Science Foundation for funding the program.
