Spatial scans in the fine structure lines of Ne II, S IV, and Ar III delineate the ionization structure of W3 IRS 1. Models of the structure which ignore the effects of dust do not reproduce either the observed ionization structure or the line strengths. Addition of dust with substantial far UV opacity (selectively absorbing photons with λ < 504 Å) sufficiently softens the stellar spectrum to reproduce the observed ionization structure - the line strengths derived from this model are compatible with "normal" cosmic abundances.
