We investigate the relation between cosmic rays and light-element (Li, Be, B) production in active galactic nuclei (AGNs).. Consideration of the propagation of cosmic rays from AGNs to Earth yields constraints on likely cosmic-ray emission from individual sources. Plausible cosmic-ray fluxes are adopted for detailed diffusion and spallation calculations. Atomic processes that determine the ionization balance of boron in an AGN environment are evaluated, and theoretical values of B III (λ2066) line emission are then computed. By comparing these results with upper limits deduced from published spectral data for moderate-redshift QSOs, we can further constrain cosmic-ray fluxes in active galaxies. Finally, we explore the implications of this work pertaining to the chemical evolution of the Milky Way, under the assumption that our Galaxy has passed through an early phase of high nuclear activity.
