The manned, European Spacelab program, now in the design and development stage, aims at a first flight in 1980. Program requirements include: a funding ceiling of approximately $360 million, flexibility for many users with varied payloads (5500-9100 kg maximum, depending on configuration), long design life (50 reuses), and compatibility with Space Shuttle. Spacelab experiments are envisioned in the following areas: astronomy, high-energy astrophysics, atmosphere and space physics, life sciences, earth observation, communications and navigation, space processing, and space technology. Spacelab will use Space Shuttle systems for transport, communications, power, orbital maintenance and maneuvering, crew accommodations, etc.
