The design concept of the Spacelab, to be produced under the technical direction of the European Space Agency for use with the NASA Space Shuttle, has been fixed, and hardware is under construction. Delivery of a fully functional engineering model is scheduled for mid-1978, followed by delivery of the flight unit in 1979 and launch with the initial Space Shuttle mission in 1980. The Spacelab module is designed to accommodate a wide variety of experiments with only slight modification of the basic unit. The major design features of the Spacelab are described in detail, and the management organization and funding are outlined.
