The definition of a lidar system for atmospheric active sounding by satellite that is compatible with Spacelab and its resources and consistent with the scientific goals of aerosol measurements, wind measurements, and measurements of minor gaseous constituents, is given. A parametric study is outlined that analyzes useful backscattered signal, noise, and signal to noise ratio. These analyses enable choosing telescope and laser subsystem specifications.
