This paper first discusses the need for harness reduction, highlighting the potential benefits of reducing the harness, and then looks at the techniques that could be applied in the short, medium, and long terms. Some of these techniques are already mature, and could be applied immediately, and several of these would result in very substantial reductions in harness mass and bulk. Other techniques need to be developed, or adapted, for spacecraft applications, and may have less obvious effects on the mass and bulk of the harness, but provide other important advantages such as reduced connector count, or better potential for system redundancy.
