We present the first space VLBI imaging observations of PKS 1921-293, made at both 1.6 and 5.0 GHz at two epochs separated by 11 months. The high-resolution provided by the orbiting antenna Highly Advanced Laboratory for Communications and Astronomy (HALCA) allows clearly identifying the compact core region with an angular resolution of approximately 0.26 milli-arcseconds (mas), which for this relatively nearby radio-loud blazar (z = 0.352) corresponds to ~1.2 parsecs (assuming H0 = 65 km s-1 Mpc-1 and q0 = 0.5). As a result, an inner jet component about 1.5 mas to the core is revealed for the first time. We suggest that this feature may be moving along a common curved trajectory connecting the jet within a few parsecs to the 10-parsec-scale jet emission. The compact core is partially resolved, but its brightness temperature (in the rest frame of the quasar) is about 3.0×1012 K, still significantly in excess of the limit of 1012 K for incoherent synchrotron emission. We will discuss the possible interpretations to this high brightness temperature source. A spectral index map made by combining the VLBI Space Observatory Programme (VSOP) 1.6 GHz image with a matched- resolution VLBA+Y 5.0 GHz image at first epoch will be presented too.
