Israel's formulation of the theory of singular layers in general relativity is applied to Gonzalez-Diaz' solution of Einstein's field equations, which was interpreted as describing space-time inside a black hole. It is shown that the solution demands the existence of a surface layer with infinite tangential stress. Thus the solution of Gonzalez-Diaz is not dynamically stable. It is suggested that space-time inside a black hole must be described by a vacuum solution of Einstein's field equations, in accordance with the standard picture.
