Recent geodetic techniques and applications are reviewed to examine the results of present study and potential directions for future investigations. The space-geodesy techniques noted include satellite and lunar laser ranging, the Global Positioning System, VLBI, the Global Orbiting Navigation Satellite System, satellite altimetry, and the Precise Range and Range Rate Equipment system. Among the applications reviewed are the monitoring of plate tectonics, polar motion, gravity-field recovery, and the modeling of the earth and tides. The activities of Telespazio are emphasized and include satellite laser ranging, VLBI, and global positioning at the Matera Space Geodesy Center. The results of these activities demonstrate that the geodetic systems can effectively determine parameters related to earth geography, kinematics, and gravitation.
