The assessment of ionospheric properties through use of ground-based incoherent scatter radar is discussed; incoherent scatter techniques employ frequencies from 50 to 1300 MHz. Thomson scattering and Bragg Law scattering are reviewed, and the development of height profiles of ionospheric electron density is considered. Ion and electron temperatures, ion composition, ion drift velocity, neutral density and temperature, and electron waves are other upper atmospheric quantities which may be assessed through incoherent scatter radar techniques. Mention is also made of associated instrumentation, such as airglow spectrometers and Fabry-Perot interferometers.
