With funding from the Illinois State Board of Higher Education and NASA's Office of Space Science, the Space Science Center for Education and Outreach at DePaul University has created "Space Science for Illinois Teachers" (SSIT), a professional development program for K-12 science and math teachers. SSIT engages teachers and space scientists in close collaborations with the goal to generate classroom activities that are based on the scientists' research, and, at the same time, can be integrated into existing curricula and meet the needs of teachers and their students. During its first two years, teachers visited scientists at Goddard Space Flight Center (summer 2000) and Yerkes Observatory (summer 2001). In this poster presentation, we will describe some of the components of SSIT, and also provide information about funding opportunities available to DPS members interested in creating similar professional development opportunities for teachers.
