The significance of advancements in space research and the value of the space effort for the pure and applied sciences, technology, and the national economy are discussed along with the high cost of space programs and the necessity of a definite hierarchy in selecting objectives and goals. The directions of Soviet space research are outlined as follows: investigation of near-earth space by geophysical rockets, artificial satellites, and spacecraft; study of the moon and planets by automatic apparatus; and biomedical research and manned spaceflights. Soviet space events from Soyuz-12 in September 1973 to the present are reviewed along with their major findings, including preparation for the joint Soviet-American Soyuz-Apollo flight.
