We investigated the surface deformation of northern Taiwan area, including the Taipei basin and its surrounding mountainous areas, the Tatun volcanoes in the north, the Linkou tableland in the west and the Foothills in the east and south, of the past decade by using the ERS-1, ERS-2 and ENVISAT SAR images. The Taipei basin is now well developed and is thus suitable for application of the Differential Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (DInSAR) technique. However, because the mountainous areas surround the Taipei basin is covered with varying vegetations over different seasons that will induce high noise ratio in interferograms, it is not suitable for applying the DInSAR technique in observing the surface deformation. Except for the DInSAR technique we otherwise developed the Persistent Scatterer (PS) InSAR technique to extract the phase signal of the radar images in this study. Our PSInSAR result shows that the atmospheric disturbance and DEM residual of the mountainous area can be successfully reduced and the precise information of surface deformation can be effectively revealed. The most conspicuous events include: the uplift of the Western Foothills, the slight uplift of Tatun volcanoes and the Linkou Tableland, the subsidence in the northwestern corner of the Taipei basin, and locally distributed slight uplift rebound in the center of Taipei basin. The displacement along the fault zones in northern Taiwan, such as the Sanchiao Fault, the Jinshan Fault, the Kanchiao Fault and the Taipei Fault, are relatively slight; only the Sanchiao Fault and parts of the Jinshan Fault have larger displacement and can be observed. We then compared our results with the leveling data and GPS measurements to draw a complete deformation field. These observations can largely help us to understand the recent deformation in and around the Taipei basin.
