The stability of acoustic disturbances in a weakly ionized homogeneous plasma immersed in a low-frequency EM field is discussed (magnetoacoustic disturbances, whistlers). A forbidden zone within which sound waves will not be generated in the ionospheric plasma is delineated. Conditions for sound generation outside the forbidden zone are derived. Available data show that sound waves exhibiting the parameters required for generation are indeed encountered under ionospheric conditions.
