Compact Symmetric Objects (CSOs), a recently identified class of powerful radio sources, have symmetric milliarcsecond-scale radio jets, that terminate in steep-spectrum hotspots embedded in radio lobes and are located within the central kiloparsec of the host galaxy (Wilkinson et al. 1994). Recently, measurements of the kinematic expansion (0.2c) in CSOs have given the most direct evidence that these are young objects with kinematic ages of <104 yr (e.g. Owsianik & Conway 1998). This measurement enabled us to reject the hypothesis, in which CSOs remain compact due to confinement by the surrounding medium. Despite the above results there is still a number of issues to be resolved about CSOs. It is not yet clear that all CSOs are young. It is also not clear whether all CSOs evolve into classical double sources. Statistical studies suggest that to first order the relative numbers of CSOs, CSSs and classical double sources are consistent with evolutionary models (O'Dea & Baum 1997). However, some CSOs could instead be short lived objects which never grow into large sources (Readhead et al. 1994). Also it is unknown how many of CSOs may result from quasi-periodic nuclear activity. To resolve these issues continuing studies to determine velocities and ages of CSOs are crucial. Extending these investigations to source distribution with much larger sizes than CSOs will further constrain possible evolutionary scenario.
