Two unsolved or partly solved problems posing a challenge to astronomers in the field of the physics of eclipsing binary stars are examined. The first problem concerns the distribution of surface brightness on the apparent disks of distorted components of close binary systems, which has been found to require a revision of theories for calculating the contributions of normal limb darkening in a plane-parallel atmosphere and gravitational effects on the flux emerging from the distorted stellar surface. A possible approach to the problem consists of the calculation of the distribution of light intensity emerging from the distorted star in terms of Clairaut coordinates, in which the radial coordinate is replaced by the potential remaining constant over the equilibrium distorted surface. The second problem concerns the possible oscillations of the stellar radii and inclination of a binary star system with respect to the celestial sphere, which may also be addressed by the use of Clairaut coordinates.
