The average fading characteristics of 42 MHz auroral backscatter and spectral Doppler features of the echoes are compared. 'Slow quasi-periodic fading' (SF) and 'rapid random fading' (RF) are observed, corresponding to different Doppler types. Strong periodicities in the 0-20 Hz range are predominant in the fading spectrum in SF; the RF spectrum is almost flat up to 40 Hz, then falling slowly with frequency. Most of the echoes have amplitude distributions which correspond to the Rayleigh law, but some very strong echoes with narrow Doppler spectra have amplitude distributions which depart from Rayleigh distributions, suggesting that a small number of specular components dominate the scatter.
