The surface magnetic field of the submillisecond pulsar SN1987A and its period derivative, as well as the time evolution of these quantities were calculated using two models: a rigid sphere model and a uniform incompressible Maclaurin's spheroid model (which is approximately valid for a newly born rapidly rotating neutron star). Special consideration is given to the evaluation of the effect of oblateness, or the shape distortion due to high rotation, on these properties of the pulsar. It was found that the magnetic field of SN1987A is extremely low. It is concluded that, since the magnetic field is weak and the distance is large, the SN1987A pulsar is unlikely to be a strong gamma-ray emitter.
