On the basis of available orbital data for the USSR Satellites 1957 α1, α2, and β1, preliminary values of atmospheric density have been calculated for the respective perigee altitudes. The computations necessarily involve a number of speculative assumptions with regard to mass-area ratios, but the results show a reasonable consistency in numerical values derived from the three satellites independently. It would appear that the atmospheric density at altitudes between 220 and 230 km is somewhat higher than has often been assumed. While the values derived here must be considered as being of an extremely tentative nature, it is expected that similar methods of calculation will in future permit the inference of atmospheric density over a wide range of altitudes from orbital data.
