A thermal-pulse model for solar microwave bursts is outlined in which shock-heated chromospheric gas is the source of such radio bursts and free-free transitions constitute the dominant emission mechanism. The following polarization properties of microwave bursts are explained in the framework of this model: (1) changes in the sense of circular polarization over the entire frequency range; (2) rapid changes in the sense of circular polarization during burst development at a fixed frequency; and (3) the temporal noncoincidence of times of burst maxima in the polarized and total fluxes. It is suggested that gyroresonance emission from local sources should also be taken into account.
