The main observational facts relating to cometary plasma tails and pertaining to theoretical calculations of the evolution and motion of plasma streamers from the cometary coma into the tail are briefly reviewed. All observations show an aberration angle of the plasma tail from the comet-sun line of a few degrees, in accordance with a radial flow of the solar wind. The velocities of streamers and condensations of the ionized tail material increase with the distance from the axis of the tail, indicating an eventual mixing with the solar wind. The theoretical attempts to describe the solar wind flow have so far been restricted on a three-dimensional field, in which cylindrical symmetry and an ionization probability of .000001/sec are assumed. The results are applied to the Lyman alpha-isophotes of comets Tago-Sato-Kosaka, Bennett, and Encke. It is shown that the flux of the solar wind protons can at least in principle be derived from such isophotes.-
