Scientific paper

The paper presents a mathematical study of an equation indicated by some models of spin/orbit coupling. These models describe the spin/orbit resonance of Mercury and certain planetary satellites. The equation incorporates a small periodic torque which decomposes into a term due to permanent asymmetry of the planet or satellite and a term due to tidal drag. The study is particularly concerned with the near-resonance behavior and the mechanism of resonance capture; the results are complementary to a global study showing how to locate the 'active' resonances.
