Stellar Interferometers: Optical Design

Scientific paper

An improvement of the traditional optical interferometer, the Michelson stellar interferometer, is described. The multi-slit interferometer in the measurement of double stars will greatly increase the brightness and visibility of the fringes and raise the limiting magnitude in the interference measurement. This paper also discusses the vulnerability of the traditional interference measurement to the influence of wavelength variation and the brightness difference between the two components of a double star and points out that there exist three kinds of circumstances that lead to the changing of the wavelength. The solution of the problem in the wavelength variation with multi-slit screen is given. It has been calculated that the influence of the wavelength variation can be eliminated when some measure requirements are satisfied. Finally, this paper puts forward a way by which the influence on the traditional method caused by the brightness difference of a double star could be overcome, thus making it possible to raise the limiting magnitude difference of the two components of a double star from 1m to 3m.
