Using a first approximation to the Hubble Space Telescope Point Spread Function, with the perfect-optical system diffraction and the expected pointing-related image motion, some problems concerning acquisition and analysis of images are emphasized. From this the authors argue that full knowledge of the actual PSF, which is being studied at the Space Telescope Science Institute and at the ESA European Coordinating Facility, is needed in order to plan the most effective use of the Hubble Space Telescope.
