The analytical determination of power-optimal swing-by trajectories is studied, using some simplifying assumptions. An analytical solution obtained for an Earth-Jupiter trajectory involving a swing-by maneuver at the planet Mars is compared with a numerical solution, showing that the analytical results provide savings on the order of 1 km/sec in the characteristic velocity of the maneuver. The method proposed is readily adaptable to flights from large to small planets.
