A water-tunnel testing set-up has been developed and three different enclosure styles have been tested on 1:500 scale models under a variety of simulated ventilation conditions. It is found that, for all enclosure styles, there is an exterior component of flow, 'uplifted' over the top of the enclosure and divided from the original main flow direction at different levels depending on model characteristics. Since the location of the stagnation point is significantly affected by an external horizontal guiding vane, it is recommended that it should be above the turbulent boundary layer at the site. Enclosures with flat or near-flat roofs are found to be superior.
