A modified method of successive linearization is proposed which makes it possible to realize an iterative optimal-control search procedure in a class of piecewise-constant and continuous piecewise-linear functions. This modified method serves as the functional basis of an applications package intended to solve a large number of optimal-control problems involving spacecraft entry into planetary atmospheres. Attention is given to the determination of the attainability region and to the definition of a range of possible final velocities for atmospheric-entry trajectories leading to a prescribed point.
