We present a theoretical evaluation of solid oxygen as a superthermal source of ultra-cold neutrons (UCN). In solid oxygen, cold and ultra-cold neutron interactions are dominated by the production and absorption of magnons. We have calculated the UCN production and loss cross-sections in solid oxygen taking into account both magnon and phonon production, and find that it is competitive with solid deuterium and lacks the problem of potential para-contaminations which can limit UCN lifetimes in solid deuterium. Preliminary UCN production results will also be presented.
