Solar Wind: Velocities

Scientific paper

The authors analyze the solar wind speed as a function of heliocentric distance v(R) as obtained by radio occulation techniques using the instruments Venera-10, -15, -16, and Viking-1. They present the results of four series of measurements of v(R). They discuss the role of magnetosonic waves, and determine the wave speeds. The authors show that the principal acceleration of the solar wind occurs in the distance range R = (9 - 25) solar radii. They determine the distance Rs where the solar windspeed passes through the sound speed, and determine the temperature of the plasma.
