This paper describes an approach for a small orbital material-processing platform using a solar thermal system as the energy source for a material furnace for use in earth orbit. Material processing onboard the shuttle or in simulated zero gravity environments has produced materials with unique properties. It is inevitable that these materials will be produced in larger sample sizes or quantities on the ISS. What is not possible is to use the ISS for a small material processing facility due to manpower limitations, space availability and power utilization. .
