This project encompasses an evolving series of small-scale data-analysis and theoretical studies of the conditions, constituents, and physical processes in space, and the solar-terrestrial physics of the influence of the sun on the Earth and near-Earth environment. The common objective of this multifaceted research is to characterize the space environment so that the ambient background of particles and electromagnetic radiation that influence space sensor performance can be determined. The project is sufficiently flexible that the investigators can take advantage of unexpected research opportunities within the overall framework of studies of the space environment. This year, the following research topics were addressed: (1) geomagnetic trapping of the anomalous component of cosmic rays; (2) the galactic magnetosphere; (3) the formation of emission features, particularly those of the iron cation Fe(+) in planetary nebulae and emission-line stars; (4) the Fe(+17) spectrum of the sun; and (5) solar abundances.
