Anisotropic electron distributions capable of producing unpolarized bremsstrahlung X rays are proven to exist. The study was performed to examine if the anisotropy of the electron velocity distribution in a thermal solar flare is of a magnitude sufficient to generate polarized bremsstrahlung. Differential cross sections of bremsstrahlung polarized parallel and perpendicular to the (v,k) plane of a solar X ray source are integrated over the source volume. Sufficient conditions for unpolarized bremsstrahlung are defined and shown to be satisfied by the anisotropy. Finally, an upper bound is found for polarization.
